Rural areas carry the highest risk – and the least monitoring

Common questions about this research
In most of Spain, no — official reporting shows the large majority of tap water technically meets EU legal limits. But “legal” is a minimum bar, not a guarantee of ideal quality. A newer, stricter precautionary nitrate guidance (6 mg/L) is already exceeded by over 3,000 municipalities, even though most of them remain within the older, less strict legal limit.
Not really. Modelled research found bottled water carries a cancer risk nearly identical to tap water, while producing roughly double the carbon footprint. Tested Spanish bottled brands have also been found to contain microplastics and, in some regions, the same PFAS compounds found in tap water.
It’s the strongest single option – cutting health risks by 80% – but it isn’t free of trade-offs. Reverse osmosis strips beneficial minerals from water, and long-term intake of mineral-stripped water has been linked to higher cardiovascular risk, amongst other health issues. Reverse osmosis systems can also regrow bacteria if they aren’t properly maintained.
Both. Some findings apply accross Spain – like the national reporting gap, where rural municipalities are both the least monitored and the most likely to exceed limits. Others are regional: elevated hardness is common along the Mediterranean coast, which are also salty rich waters. PFAS has been specifically documented in south Catalonia.
All studies are either peer-reviewed academic research or official government registries (SINAC, Spain’s national drinking water database). None are industry-funded studies. Every claim on this page links directly to it’s original source.
Partly a data problem: the municipalities most likely to have quality issues are also the least likely to report data, which keeps the scale of the issue officially understated. Partly an infrastructure problem: fixing source water and distribution networks nationwide is slow and expensive — which is exactly the gap point-of-use treatment is built to close in the meantime.
